Opera Orlando: Four Lost Santas/Amahl and the Night Visitors

  • Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Mezzo-Soprano Erika Vasallo will be featured as a principal artist with Opera Orlando, singing the role of Judy in the world premiere of Spicer Carr and Rose Freeman’s Four Lost Santas. This comic Christmas opera will be paired with Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, which Erika will sing the role of Mother.

More information from Opera Orlando’s website: Opera Orlando presents the world premiere of Four Lost Santas, a comic Christmas Opera commissioned by Opera Orlando based on an original concept by Gabriel Preisser with music by Spicer Carr and a libretto by Spicer Carr and Rose Freeman. This fun, family-friendly piece is a lead-in to Menotti’s seasonal favorite Amahl and the Night Visitors, and it is the perfect antidote for the hustle and bustle of the season. Join a barbershop quartet of Santas who find themselves lost on their way to what should be their big break: SantaCon! They are thankfully rescued by Judy and Rudy, a mother and son who are running late to their community theater production of Amahl. When they can’t fix the Santas’ car, they all pile into the Mom’s car to get into town.
They arrive to utter chaos at the theater as the three Kings and Page have quit the production. Rudy is particularly disappointed, but the Santas save the day as they volunteer to sing the roles in Amahl, because of course they have sung them before. As the cast breathes a sigh of relief, the stage manager yells, “Places!” and then begins Amahl and the Night Visitors, a poignant story of a beautiful Christmas miracle.

Show dates and times: December 6th at 7:30 PM, December 7th at 2 PM, December 7th at 7:30 PM, and December 8th at 2 PM.

Four Lost Santas/Amahl and the Night Visitors will be sung in English with English and Spanish supertitles and have a run time of approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

Opera Orlando: Defiant Requiem

Mezzo-Soprano Erika Vasallo will be featured in the Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín.

Concert information from Opera Orlando’s website: Opera Orlando is proud to present the Orlando premiere of Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín, a concert-drama that combines the magnificent music of Verdi’s Requiem with video testimony from survivors of the original Terezín chorus and footage from the 1944 Nazi propaganda film about Theresienstadt. The work tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp (Terezín) during World War II, who performed Verdi’s Requiem while experiencing the horrors of the concentration camps. With only a single score, they performed the celebrated oratorio sixteen times amidst the most horrendous of conditions.

In addition to a full orchestra, and 120 member chorus, the work also weaves in actors who speak the words of imprisoned conductor Rafael Schächter who organized the performances in the camp and others. The piece was conceived and created by The Defiant Requiem Foundation president Murry Sidlin, who will be on stage conducting the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Opera Orlando Chorus, and members of Orlando Sings.
